What is a Geocoin?
A Geocoin (also called Geocurrency, Trackable Item, or Travel Bug) is a special coin created by geocachers as a signature item or calling card. Like any trackable item (TB), each geocoin is assigned a unique identifier that allows tracking its progress throughout its "life."
How does it work?
Since each geocoin has a unique tracking identifier, its progress can be monitored on Geocaching.com through logs posted by those who find the coins. Different types of logs can be made on a geocoin’s page. Once logged into Geocaching.com, you can share your experiences on the geocoin's page and even upload associated photos. Everything works similarly to logging a cache. Additionally, once you log that you've picked up a geocoin, it will appear in your profile's inventory section.
What should I do if I find a Geocoin?
Don't panic! You've already completed the first step by visiting this page. Now refer to the "How to Use a Geocoin" section, which will explain in greater detail how to pick up and drop off Geocoins. (Coming soon)
What should I do if I find an unactivated Geocoin?
Sometimes geocachers place unactivated Geocoins in a cache as a gift for the next finder. Occasionally, the activation code might not be included. If you need an activation code, visit this Geocaching.com webpage to activate it. During activation, you will find a link labeled "Retrieve your activation code." Enter the code on the coin, and the activation code will be emailed to you.
How can I create an information sheet for my Geocoin?
To help your coin reach its goal, customized information sheets can be printed and sent along with the coin. To print one, visit your coin's page and click on "Print information sheet."
I found a Geocoin, but the site doesn’t recognize its ID!
Each geocoin has two codes. To log a geocoin on the website, you must use the tracking ID found on the coin itself, not the reference code displayed on the coin's page (starting with TB). Some coins may not be trackable on Geocaching.com; trackable coins are typically labeled "Trackable at Geocaching.com."
What should be done with a Geocoin?
This is the most common question when finding a coin. Should I keep it? Move it to another cache? Take it on a trip? The answer depends on the owner's objective for the coin. Typically, the best way to find this information is by visiting the coin's webpage and reading the Objective section. If the owner has specified a theme or special instructions, try your best to respect the coin’s objective, or send the owner an email for clarification.
Selling a coin that doesn’t belong to you is generally considered unethical unless you have received explicit permission from its owner.
If you create your own series of Geocoins and don't want people selling them, it’s recommended that you activate all coins on Geocaching.com before they leave your possession. This establishes your claim of ownership and allows you to disable the coin upon request if it is reported. If you place unactivated Geocoins, it is considered a transfer of ownership, and Geocaching.com (Groundspeak) cannot intervene.
Questions/Answers for Owners
Where can I buy my own Geocoins?
In our store, of course! You’ll find coins from the association, event-related coins, and official Geocaching.com coins. Certain companies can also create custom coins based on your sketches, drawings, or photos. Check a list provided by Geocaching.com here under the tab Geocoin Manufacturers & Resellers.
I received my Geocoins. What should I do next?
Activate each geocoin you have. Visit the Trackables page to start activating your new Geocoins. Follow the step-by-step activation instructions. Once activated, you can place them in caches or trade them with friends.
Where can I find my activation code?
Usually, the company supplying your coins will include the activation code. They might also have a retrieval system on their website. If they’re from AGQ, check the FAQ on our site or contact the store administrator if forgotten. Geocaching.com also has a retrieval system; during activation, click "Retrieve your activation code" to receive it by email.
How can I drop a Geocoin into my own cache?
Once your new cache is published, visit the cache page and log a "Note" entry. Write a note and select the geocoin you wish to drop into your cache. This also applies to any other cache.
The traveled distance is incorrect. How can I fix this issue?
The distance is calculated for each Geocoin based on the chronological order of logs. Sometimes, geocachers enter an incorrect date when logging their find, causing the logs to appear out of order. This often results in errors in distance calculations.
To correct this, you need to delete the incorrect logs and notify the concerned geocacher to re-log their entry correctly. You will need to address these issues on a case-by-case basis.
The Geocoin is no longer in a cache. How can I remove it?
Sometimes, a Geocoin is picked up, but for some reason, the person who took it does not log their discovery. If this happens, subsequent geocachers who visit the cache will likely inform you that the Geocoin is no longer there. As the owner of the coin, you have the option to move your Geocoin to an unknown location until it is found again. Visit your Geocoin's page on Geocaching.com and choose the option to move your coin to an unknown location. This won't affect the coin's overall journey or distance calculations. Cache owners also have the option to move incorrectly inventoried Geocoins out of their caches.
How can I transfer ownership of my Geocoin to another geocacher?
Visit the Trackable adoption tool and enter your Geocoin’s tracking number. Then, enter the username of the person to whom you wish to transfer the coin. This is a handy utility for sending and receiving adoption requests and ensuring a smooth transition between the previous and new owner.
